We are excited to announce that on January 15, 2019 The Investigative Fund relaunches as Type Investigations. This name change comes as part of a broader rebrand here in which our parent organization, The Nation Institute, becomes Type Media Center, and Nation Books becomes Bold Type Books.

We believe Type conveys our commitment to old school journalism values — while offering us the flexibility to expand our journalism partnerships across platforms, from print and digital to radio and television. We trust that Type will quickly become known as an incubator of original, independent, socially significant investigative reporting; as an editorial shop that helps reporters and stories go big.

When I started here more than ten years ago, I was part of a team of two working with a handful of outlets. Today, Type Investigations relaunches with an incredible team of talented editors — Sarah Blustain, Alissa Figueroa, Jayati Vora, Joe Conason, and Richard Salame — a roster of award-winning reporting fellows, and a deep bench of freelance talent hard at work on stories that matter. Along the way, thanks in part to our reporting, some cops got indicted for hate crimes, major tobacco companies changed their child labor policies, and a law got passed ending predatory lending practices. The Border Patrol even changed its use-of-force policies, dramatically reducing deaths during law enforcement encounters.

In the weeks ahead, we’ll be announcing the expansion of our Ida B. Wells Program, which mentors a new generation of journalists of color as investigative reporters. And we’ll be launching major new projects including a podcast with Gimlet, a documentary with Frontline, a radio piece with Reveal, a print feature with the Washington Post Magazine, a digital story with HuffPost’s longform platform The Highline, and a newspaper series with one of the country’s most historic African American papers, the St. Louis American. We’ll also be tackling the border wall with The Intercept, threats to protected lands with Pacific Standard, gentrification with Bloomberg Businessweek, the rise of authoritarianism with The New Republic, and prisoner abuse with The Nation.

Thanks for being here with us for this journey — for reading and sharing our work, for supporting us, and for helping our stories drive change.

We’re thrilled about all that lies ahead.
