JULY 16, 2025 – Type Investigations announced today a significant expansion of our Springboard Project for local newsrooms serving historically marginalized communities, thanks to a new 3-year, $1 million grant from Press Forward, a national initiative to reimagine local news.
Type was selected as one of 22 projects receiving a total of $22.7 million through Press Forward’s Open Call on Infrastructure to address the urgent challenges local newsrooms face today.
“Press Forward’s funding is an incredible boost to the Springboard Project, one that supports our goal of building transformative partnerships with newsrooms that have earned the trust of historically underserved communities,” said Noy Thrupkaew, Director of Partnerships at Type Investigations. “As support grows for local news, these communities can’t continue to be left behind. This funding helps us tackle longstanding systemic inequities through deep collaborations with the newsrooms that serve them.”
The Springboard Project was born in 2023 after months of dialogue with dozens of local newsroom leaders. They explained that they want to take on more investigative journalism and further empower their communities to hold powerful actors accountable. But they need outside resources to produce this labor-intensive work: reporting and editing capacity; assistance with records requests, data analysis, and fact-checking; and fundraising support. Springboard resources the entire newsroom and tailors our approach to each organization’s needs.
“Today’s local newsrooms are much smaller than 25 years ago yet must do more with less – particularly due to rapid changes in technology and demands of a 24-hour news cycle,” said Dale Angin, Press Forward’s director. “These projects represent a range of solutions that are needed to meet urgent challenges. We hope these awards can provide local newsrooms, organizations, and journalists with shared resources that strengthen their efficiency and capacity.”
For our first partnership through the Springboard Project, we worked with Blacklight, the investigative unit at the New York Amsterdam News. We provided editorial support for their project on bail reform, and provided on-the-ground reporting assistance for an ambitious series on the impact of gun violence on communities of color. Most recently, we teamed up with the Gulf States Newsroom to investigate the critical shortage of sexual assault nurse examiners (SANEs) in the Gulf South.
Press Forward’s support will allow Type to work intensively with more than ten new local partners over the next three years. Learn more about the Springboard Project here. Learn more about Press Forward’s support through its Open Call on Infrastructure here.
